Those who opposed this new form of government were called Anti- Federalists. The Anti- Federalists were concerned that the elites would only try to benefit themselves and would be oppressive towards the people. These concerns were handled by making a compromise. The compromise was that the Anti- Federalists would ratify the Constitution, and in return a Bill of Rights would be drafted to protect the people from the government.

Ratification of the Constitution
There are a few reasons it was so difficult to ratify the Constitution. One reason was that the people feared the delegates only had the interests of the elite few on their mind when the Constitution was being drafted. This was largely in part because all of them represented the .001% of people who were college educated at the time. Another reason was that the central government would've held too much power at the states expense. Lastly, people did not agree with there being no protection from the government in the form of amendments and a Bill of Rights.
