Electoral College

The Electoral College was created to create a barrier between the normal American voters and those who the government wants the opinion from. This is to prevent the majority from ruling over the minority. In today's society, the electors always vote in compliance with the popular vote. It is because of this reason that I do not mind the Electoral system. In the past, faithless electors have voted against the popular vote but this never happens anymore. I personally feel that the electoral college succeeded in the Bush v. Gore election. Bush won fair and square because his strategy was to get the votes of the states with the most electors and that is just what he did. Whether or not you agree or disagree with the Electoral College system is irrelevant, it will always be around and our opinions on the matter are senseless and mean nothing.

Extra Credit

This article is about a father of a 15 month old boy who died of vehicular homicide in July of this year. The father was just charged with negligent homicide after turning himself in to authorities. The father claims he was supposed to drop his son off at daycare and go to work. After work, when he went to go get his son, he was informed that his son never made it to daycare and he found out that his son was still in his car. He claims that when he found this out he drove to the hospital immediately, but it was too late and his son died from hyperthermia. In August, a state medical examiner ruled the boys death a homicide. A similar case to this happened just a month before in Atlanta. The story was almost identical to that of the Atlanta incident.
I believe that something like this should never happen. How can somebody “forget” their child in the car when the reason why they drove to that place was for their child. It just seems like common sense to remember your child. It would seem as though the father did not actually go to the daycare and just went straight to work. He then left his child in the car all day and then drove to the daycare to try and cover his tracks. This should never happen, and it is very irresponsible to leave your child in the car. Obviously, this case wasn’t an accident but it is a very heinous crime.

Lincoln

Lincoln faced many difficulties while trying to pass the Thirteenth Amendment. One was obviously racism. Another was that many feared what 4 million freed slaves would be doing. Many of those same people also feared that the freed slaves would take their jobs and work for less pay. Another difficulty was the poverty that many of the slaves would face after slavery. Voting was a very common fear among the people. People did not want uneducated slaves choosing who could be in office. Lastly, 2/3 votes were needed to ratify which is very hard to get. Lincoln used a variety of implied powers to try to get the proposed amendment to pass.

He was a little dirty in his proceedings to try to get the amendment passed. He offered lame duck democrats jobs if they voted for the passing of the amendment. He also "lied" about peace talks with the south to keep the voting from being postponed. Abe did this because he wanted peace to be completely contingent on the amendment. He was a firm believer that the amendment was so important because it would set in stone the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. The Thirteenth Amendment did ultimately end up getting passed signing its spot in the timeline of American history.

Ratification of the Constitution

There are a few reasons it was so difficult to ratify the Constitution. One reason was that the people feared the delegates only had the interests of the elite few on their mind when the Constitution was being drafted. This was largely in part because all of them represented the .001% of people who were college educated at the time. Another reason was that the central government would've held too much power at the states expense. Lastly, people did not agree with there being no protection from the government in the form of amendments and a Bill of Rights.

Those who opposed this new form of government were called Anti- Federalists. The Anti- Federalists were concerned that the elites would only try to benefit themselves and would be oppressive towards the people. These concerns were handled by making a compromise. The compromise was that the Anti- Federalists would ratify the Constitution, and in return a Bill of Rights would be drafted to protect the people from the government.

thanks have a good day

Why the Articles of Confederation Failed

The Articles of Confederation failed for many reasons. One of the main reasons was because every state was as independent as possible. Every state had its own laws and regulations that its citizens had to follow. The only time the states collaborated with one another was if there was a common threat to the United States, not just one of them. Another reason was that the government did not have the power to tax its citizens. What this meant was that there was a government, but no money to do anything with it. Lastly, to amend the Articles of Confederation, you needed a unanimous vote. This made it really hard to change things because the larger states like Virginia would have different interests than a smaller state like New Jersey. It was for these main reasons that the Articles of Confederation failed.1

Life With No Government

Life without a government would be much different from how we live our lives now. Without a governing body we would not have taxes. This may sound good but things like robbery, murder, larceny would not be illegal. Children would not have to go to school and there would most likely be no such thing as school. This would be due to the fact that our government funds the schools we attend. There would also be no such thing as minimum wage. This would mean that companies could take advantage of their workers and charge them little to no pay at all. This would also imply that there could also be slaves. This would pretty much suggest that anyone could do anything without having any consequences for their actions.

There are many reasons that humans made governing bodies. Many of those reasons were already mentioned. One being murder. It would seem unlikely that man would live on the earth for such a long time and let something like murder slide. Another thing would be public education. As soon as man appeared on earth he had the desire to learn, so it only seems likely that man would make a system in which everyone would pay for education. How does everyone go about paying for school? Taxes. The governing body that man would eventually make would implement taxes to help pay for things like school and various insurances. Another reason humans organized a system of government was to keep order and be told how to live life. If humans didn't have to go to school or work everyday, how would we live? What would we do? People wanted a set of guidelines that they had to follow to help them live their lives without chaos. It is safe to say that without a government life would be much different from what we're used to.
